One of the most important things when booking a company to provide their services for your event is if they have liability insurance. It is not only a required thing to have but it shows you how committed, and professional a company is in providing their services. There are a lot of new companies that pop up just to make a quick buck(See my previous blog post-The oversaturated photo booth market). Having liability insurance is a positive sign that the company is serious about what they do. It separates the "Men" from the "Boys".
Why is it so important? A lot of venues are now requiring vendors to have liability insurance. We provide the equipment that services your event. We unload the equipment from our vehicles and move them into the venue. We then set it up, perform the service, break it down, and load it back into the vehicle. Anything can happen during that time at the venue. Someone could trip over a cord and get hurt or someone could be dancing and accidentally hit a speaker and have it fall on them. Liability insurance protects the client, the venue, and our company.
For a company to not have insurance is a really scary thing. I have heard horror stories from the legal ramifications of a company that did not have insurance at an event where someone got hurt. It completely shut the company down and has ruined the life of the owner. Not only that, this has caused the plaintiff a lot of grief, time, and be in unnecessary circumstances.
Here is an actual story from an actual company that provides the same services we do.
Anonymous Several years ago had an enclosed booth at outdoor concert venue in the mountains (Booth was inside main building). At end of the evening brought our box truck back on the grounds to load out. Upon leaving a big coach bus was blocking part of the entrance waiting for the last guests. I moved slightly to the left when began hearing a ripping sound. Evidently, there was a point of a roof sticking out on the next building that I not only ran into, but lodged it in the side of the truck and was unable to dislodge it, blocking the only entrance. Had to call a tow truck (at midnight) to literally pull the truck to get unstuck. In addition, catering had to hand carry everything to the road causing overtime for the bride. Had to plead with the venue not to take damages out of client's security deposit, but rather go through my insurance. Insurance covered property damage, caterer's overtime charges and getting the truck repaired.
Liability insurance is not only beneficial for the company, it can help protect the client in situations like this too. This is one example as to why hire someone who carries insurance. There are many more horror stories like this out there. Just imagine if the company did not have insurance.
